Course Description

The advanced shelter and fire skills class will expand on the previous shelter and fire classes taught at the Sequatchie School. This daylong event will provide an in depth look at these essential components of the sacred order of survival.

If you have not yet attended these basic shelter and fire classes, you can still participate in this advanced workshop, however, the content for this class will assume a certain degree of experience.

We will explore scout pit shelters, cave shelters, and log shelters, as well as interior elements like grass mats and primitive mattresses. Most of the shelters will be constructed before the class begins so as to allow for students to experience these dwellings and experiment with refinements rather than building from the ground up as we have done in the past. The shelters will be fully outfitted with primitive supplies and handmade materials so that everyone will understand how such a camp functionally operates.

Advanced fire making will focus exclusively on primitive fire technologies such as the hand drill, the bow drill, and the flint/steel method. We will practice techniques related to smokeless fires, hole fires, and primitive cooking for various weather conditions, to include making fire in the rain and wet environments. The coal burning method of crafting containers and utensils will also be demonstrated, which offers numerous practical applications within a primitive camp.

This class is designed to fine-tune shelter and fire building skills to a high level of proficiency in a variety of contexts.
